Our History

  • The Directorate of Welfare of Plain Tribes & Backward Classes, Assam was created in 1976 with the aim of administering and implementing various schemes for the development of people belonging to Plain Tribes and Backward Classes of Assam in various sectors viz. education, infrastructure, income generation, etc. The Directorate facilitates as a mediator of the requirements of the people belonging to the backward sector to the Govt. and simultaneously delivers/implements any such grants sanctioned by the Govt. with the help of its various sub-ordinate offices, Councils, agencies, etc.

    The Directorate functions with the help of its sub-ordinate office establishments in the plain districts of Assam. The sub-ordinate offices consists of 22 Nos. of Integrated Tribal Development Project Office headed by Project Directors and 50 Nos. of Sub-Divisional Welfare Offices headed by Sub-Divisional Welfare Officers.
